In the strictest terms, no. Chemicals typically are products causing a reaction or causing a change in physical state. More often when people are looking for a chemical free solution, they are looking for natural or less toxic products. When something is called a chemical, people generally think of artificial man made substances. When something is called a natural product, you think of naturally occurring substances from nature.
So, are there natural chemicals? Absolutely! Natural seaweed enzymes physically change the state of the organic materials by breaking them down into harmless components. Are there dangerous natural chemicals? Sure. Natural chemicals like hydrocyanic acid or carbon dioxide in large doses can kill you. Therefore it is important to be informed about the products you use.
When you think of natural hot tub chemicals, you generally are looking for a non-chlorine alternative. I read about seaweed enzymes being used for a variety of natural products. In my search for natural hot tub products, I found a natural product called Spa Magic.(now Nova Spa Water Conditioner). The seaweed enzymes remove the organic contaminants from the water so bacteria doesn’t have food to grow or multiply. It seems too simple to be true, so I decided to try it for myself.
After the first day or two, I noticed a little cloudiness in the water and a slight organic odor. This is the enzymes working to clean up the organic materials that had become trapped in the plumbing. The water cleared up on it’s own. Now I enjoy my spa for 90 days between applications with very little maintenance. I do use an ounce of water clarifier every week or so, to help remove the oils and lotions that wash off our bodies when using the spa. The company also recommends using a shock product once a week in conjunction with Nova Spa Water Conditioner since it is not a sanitizer. A non-chlorine shock works well and evaporates quickly.
What I liked best, was the soft feel of the water. There were no chlorine odors or dry skin afterward. When I get out of my spa, I don’t feel the need to shower, like I do with chlorine pools and hot tubs. This is a great product for people sensitive to chemicals.
